Vinny Digerolamo

Our Story

In 2011, just before my 10th birthday, my mom came to me with a story one of her coworkers told her about his 7-year-old son, Vinny DiGerolamo. Vinny had been diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer of the soft tissue, at the age of 4. His parents had started an organization called KOCC, the Kids of Childhood Cancer Foundation, to raise money to help children and their families pay for medical treatments and to send children with more critical forms of cancer on special trips with their families to create memories with them. When I heard of this foundation and the stories of thousands of children benefiting from it, all I wanted to do was contribute. When I had my birthday party, I asked for my friends and family to bring as much or as little money as they would like to donate, instead of gifts. I don’t remember exactly how much money we raised that year, but I don’t think that mattered because it kickstarted my dedication to the foundation and my love for a boy, and many other children, whom I had never met.
After donating the money we raised, the family of Vinny informed us of an event that they hold in May of each year called the Walk4OurKids. It is a 5K, held at the Fourth of July Park in Kernersville, that raises money just like we did for my birthday. The event had already passed by the time we heard about it, so we waited until the next year to form our team. My team was called Chase’s Team for Vinny, which it is still called to this day. My team ended up raising around $1000 for the charity from the walk, which gave me a really good feeling and left me wanting to contribute more.
On February 18, 2013, Vinny passed away in his home surrounded by friends and family. As he was dying, Vinny said to his mother, “I love my life.” Although I never got to meet Vinny, I have met many other kids at the KOCC events who have benefitted from the program, in Vinny’s place. Ever since then, we have still been participating the events held by the KOCC Foundation to honor Vinny and all of the other warriors turned angels.
For the next few years, we participated in the Walk4OurKids 5K, as well as a chili cookoff that raises money the same way. During the money raising period before the walk, we have raised over $2000 each year for the past 4 years. In April 2013, after the 5K was over, there was a reception to announce the raffle winners and to thank people for coming. They asked everybody to sit down for a special announcement and they called me up to the stage. They awarded me a plaque and acknowledged me as an official board member, as well as my mom. It made me feel really good to be an official member so I could continue to show my support for the organization.
This whole experience has really opened my eyes to the world and is truly a life changing experience. I hope to continue on with the organization for as long as I can, and continue to improve the lives of kids and their families one step at a time.
